The ability to regenerate damaged tissue is one of the great challenges in the fields of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. One of the main remaining obstacles in the development and success of biomaterials for regenerative medicine applications is their frequent instigation of a foreign body response (FBR) in the recipient. In this project, we examine and characterize the tissue response to commonly used materials in the tissue engineering field, to inform the development of smarter, regenerative biomaterial therapies.

Methods implemented in this project include hydrogel material synthesis and characterization, and analysis of the tissue response through an array of high resolution imaging and analytical methods, with a focus in this project towards histological and immunohistochemical validation of results.
